use email to increase engagement with your audience

Does it ever feel like you’re talking into thin air?

Hello? Is anybody reading this?

Replies, comments, even hate mail would be nice!

I am constantly pushing out content through my blog, social media, and my email list (my crown jewel!) and let me tell you, the feeling is REAL.

When you’re communicating with your audience, it is supposed to be a conversation.

And I’ve said it before: I believe email is the most important factor in building a relationship with your audience. And the easiest! But there’s a formula.

Today, I’m spilling my tips and tricks for Increasing Engagement on your Email List.

How to Increase Engagement on your Email List

My email list is very important to me. I have a pretty active and engaged audience, and when I send an email, my audience responds.

I’ve broken down a typical email I would send to my online boutique customers that always results in a response: A Click, A Purchase, or A Reply.

Full disclosure to set up expectations: I get LOTS of clicks, I get SOME purchases, and I get ONE reply for pretty much every single email I send.

Let’s Dive In to the 5 Ways I Increase Engagement of my Email List:

1) I Write in First Person

Exhibit A:

send emails that will increase engagement

My emails are always in 1st person, and as you can tell I write pretty conversationally. I’ve always had an easier time writing like this because it makes me FEEL like I’m speaking to someone, and in return I think it makes people FEEL like someone is speaking to them.

Obviously, when a human being is speaking TO YOU, you’re more drawn in, no?

2) I Make it Personal

For instance, see the email below:

I’m not afraid to tell people what’s up in my life if it relates to the email.

The example above is a little straight forward, I explained why we’ve been light on sending emails: WE WERE BUSY.

But I’ve also opened up & gotten personal to offer suggestions:

  • I wore this dress to ______.
  • I used this product for ______.
  • This helped me to ______.

Offering personal anecdotes and suggestions directly in an email is just another way I engage my audience.

3) I Offer One Clear Call-to-Action

call to action in emails

IMPORTANT. Your call to action should be CLEAR. And fyi, I always only have one. Yep, ONE Call-to-Action. Every single clickable thingy goes to the exact SAME page on my website.

In the above example, the box “SEE IT HERE” and the “Spring in my Step” link AND finally the main “SHOP HERE” call-to-action box all link to the same page.

But I’m sure you guessed it, the strongest call-to-action is the “Shop Here” box, which gets 95% of the clicks for the entire email.

Is this cool stuff? I hope you think so!

4) I Encourage Conversation

This one is simple yet I really don’t see anyone doing this.

I tell people, hey, HIT REPLY.

I put this at the bottom of every single email. Because it says HI I’M REAL and I’m ready to chat when you are. This type of engagement is my absolute favorite because it is genuine as heck. When do you really get to have conversations with your clients? Honestly, not enough.

5) Sign Off with My Picture

And because I’m a narcissist, I always sign off with my picture.

But narcissist or not, I think it is a good touch to include my picture. I think people can relate more when they can visualize the person speaking to them, especially since I’m already talking in first person.

My 5 steps all comes down to one thing: consistency. I use this strategy as a formula for every single email I write — and my list can expect the same type of email from me on a weekly basis, which in turn has created a really loyal and responsive audience.
