set goals in 2017 for a new business

Let’s talk #goals.

But first you need to know a little something about me: I’m obsessed with them.

I’m a classic “List Person.” I have to-do lists for my to-do lists AND THAT’S A REAL THING. I’ll explain later…

Don’t Get Between an Entrepreneur and Her Lists.

One thing I’ve found strikingly different between how entrepreneurs create goals vs how 9-5ers create goals is the Content of those goals.

It’s amazing how bad 9-5ers are at making professional goals.

And there’s why:

My financial existence relies on my ability to achieve my goals.

They’re not just things I write on paper. They’re not resolutions. They’re not dreams or wishes or ideas that would make me a really happy person.

I plan to set goals in 2017 that act as my road map for how I am going to run my business over the next period of time.

And therein is the biggest difference between how entrepreneurs set my goals vs. how other people set goals.

How I Set Goals

I am not so much concerned with the general goals “Increase Revenue” as I am with the how of the goals.

Increase Revenue. How?

Increase customers. How?

Get more web traffic How?

Build a bigger email list. How?

etc.

I can go about 3-4 more steps deep into that process. And I do.

{Told you I wasn’t kidding about my to-do lists for my to-do lists}

For Instance:

I bet so many of you have a goal for 2017 to leave your 9-5 job and run your business full time.

Shouldn’t that be two goals?

  1. Leave My Job
  2. Run My Business Full Time

Those are both huge enough deals that you will need a plan to execute these both. They may seem like they’re the same thing, but NO. They’re independent goals, and you need to map out an exit strategy independent of anything you will be doing to build your business.

And since I have this process NAILED DOWN for my business, I can also achieve my personal goals, too. Hey there, work-life balance, I’m looking at you!

I’d love to travel more. How?

Let’s jump on a plane to Paris. Ok, how?

I need to sell one extra house in March. YES! So, how?

I think you get it…

9-5ers, don’t take this personally. But you may not be very good at setting goals because your financial existence doesn’t depend on you reaching them. If you want to be an entrepreneur, goal-setting is something you’re going to have to get really good at.
